Changes and download verification for FERMI.
1.0.0
Released 7 October 2026
The first release of FERMI: ask questions about your own documents and get answers with the passages they came from, on your own computer.
Asking
- Ask in plain words on the ask page.
- Every answer shows the passages it came from; open one to see its page.
- When your documents do not answer the question, FERMI says so.
- Answers are marked as AI-generated.
- AI tools that speak the Model Context Protocol can search your documents through FERMI.
Your documents
- Reads PDF, Word, Excel, RTF and HTML files in the folders you choose.
- Never writes to your documents: nothing in them is created, changed, moved or deleted.
- Reads each file once, and again only when it changes.
Privacy
- Runs on your own computer, and listens on this computer only until you pair a phone or another computer.
- The language model downloads when you choose, or installs from a folder or drive with no connection.
- Cloud providers are off unless you turn one on.
- No account, no telemetry, no analytics.
Running it
- Apps for Windows, Mac and Linux on x64 and arm64, for iPhone and Android, and a Docker image for Linux.
- FERMI checks for updates once a day while automatic updates are on.
- Updates are verified against a signed checksum list before they run.
- FERMI keeps its index, model and settings in its own folder, never beside your documents.
